Unless I see excel spreadsheets I dont buy it I already tried it and the way you described it. Though they have a smaller effect, traffic lights can be effective even at heavily used roads, whereas roundabouts simply cannot handle too much traffic.
This is contrary to a roundabout: cars turning left will potentially get in the way of every other entrance to a roundabout. Cars turning left through a light will phase through oncoming traffic rather than waiting for and blocking it, which offers a big speed boost. The benefit is that cars slow down at 4-ways, even if no cars are coming. For example, when you have two driveways leading into a throughfare. Lights are also useful in situations in which you must create a 4-way intersection, but you expect most of the traffic to come from north/south or east/west.
